Ex Libris is an expression in Latin that literally means “from the Books of”. Its name reflects the tradition of this street, Rua da Misericórdia, which links Praça Luís de Camões with Largo Trindade Coelho in Chiado and borders the historic neighbourhood of Bairro Alto. Ex Libris is a testament to the vibrant literary and journalistic scene that has always been a part of the street, having housed the offices of O Diário Ilustrado, which was shut down by the government in 1956, and the bookshop Livraria Camões.
